In a recent newspaper report, it was reported that the percentage of recycled glass produced in Italy has suffered a worrying drop. The reason given for the downwards trend, reported Assovetro president Massimo Cestaro, was the ever-increasing tendency, particularly in large cities such as Rome, to gather “multi-component“ rubbish as opposed to “single-component“ waste. Cestaro maintained that this method will lead to a progressive worsening of the quality of scrap glass and that the Ronchi decree to recycle 50% of glass consumed in Italy by 2002, was therefore at risk.
