In order to make up for a pressing shortage of glass, Glaverbel has confirmed its decision to build a 15th float glass plant. Glaverbel said the new plant will expand its production capacity to meet the continuing growth in glass consumption in western and central Europe. The plant will be located at the Moustier site in the Walloon Region of Belgium, which will bring the number of a float lines at the site to four. By concentrating four float lines on a single site, the Group aims to leverage the benefits of size in terms of production performance and flexibility, and to take advantage of the existing infrastructure to speed up construction of the plant and thus reduce its capital cost. This new float line will also enable the Group to reinforce its strategy of specializing in products with high added value, such as coated glass, and to meet the growing demand by its processing plants which make glass products for the building and automotive industries. The new plant, which should be operational by the third quarter of 2001, will create about 60 new jobs.
