H2GLASS is introduced at Conference on Decarbonising combustion

The International Flame Research Foundation (IFRF) and its Italian Committee are organising a Topic-Oriented Technical Meeting (TOTeM), the 50th TOTeM in the series, on December 5 and 6, 2023, in Piacenza, Italy. The theme of the event is “Decarbonising combustion” with a focus on hard-to-abate sectors like glass, metal, cement and ceramic. The event will take place at the Piacenza Campus of the Politecnico di Milano and will include a visit of a nearby innovative carbon capture facility.

The conference will analyse themes like emission containment, decarbonization, and more. The topic’s effects in terms of modelling and, as a result, the valuation and application of the various melting solutions will also be discussed. H2GLASS will be introduced among other initiatives and projects that are committed to accelerating decarbonisation in the glass industry.

The conference theme was inspired by the glass industry’s need to address its emission problem, as well as the IFRF’s goal of enhancing applied combustion research and increasing cooperation and information exchange throughout the international combustion and energy arena. The glass industry contributes about 5 percent of total industrial CO2 emissions in Europe. Therefore, the partnership is proposing a shared way to discuss developments in the field of combustion by collaborating with other expert subjects.

Coordinated by SINTEF ENERGY, H2GLASS is driven by 23 strong partners from 8 European countries representing research and industry institutions, major manufacturers from the glass industry as well as the aluminium industry. Each partner brings specific expertise, background, and networks into the project, contributing to the outcomes and outreach of H2GLASS.

The objectives of H”GLASS are:

  • Develop the technology stack that will enable 100 percent H2combustion in the glass industry;
  • Validate H2GLASS technology through application in industrial context;
  • Prove economic and environmental viability of H2GLASS solutions compared to fossil fuels;
  • Develop IT architecture for automatic control and management and more efficient industrial processes;
  • Raise public understanding on H2 technology as solution for decarbonising industrial processes;
  • Transfer technology to other EU energy-intensive industries.
