SBTi approves Vetropack Group’s carbon emissions reduction target

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has reviewed and officially validated the near-term science-based emissions reduction targets as defined by Vetropack Group.

The global organisation has thus confirmed that the targets submitted in April 2024 are in line with the SBTi’s strictly science-based criteria. Vetropack’s plans to reduce scope 1 and scope 2 emissions were deemed to conform to the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

As its SBTi target, Vetropack commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50.4 percent by 2032, using 2021 as the base year. Vetropack further commits to reduce absolute scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions from purchased goods and services, capital goods, fuel- and energy-related activities and upstream transportation and distribution by 30 percent within the same time-frame.

Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions from Vetropack’s own production, while Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions caused by the purchase of electricity. Scope 3 emissions are indirect emissions caused by processes outside the company but related to Vetropack’s production and operations.

The SBTi is a globally recognised initiative that supports companies in setting science-based climate targets. Its goal is for companies worldwide to halve their emissions by 2030 and reduce them to zero by 2050. The validation of Vetropack’s targets ensures that the reduction measures are in line with the Paris Climate Agreement. Vetropack Group had already announced its commitment to the SBTi in 2022. The validation by the SBTi now represents another significant step towards a more sustainable future.
