Close encounter with the glass of the future

AGC Asahi Glass (AGC) is participating in Milan Design Week for the second consecutive year with an impressive art installation that showcases technologies available for the glass of the future.

The project for 2016, titled “Amorphous”, intends to redefine the traditional image of glass, taking inspiration from an “amorphous” molecular structure without a definite shape.
About 5,000 pieces of thin, chemically strengthened glass create an airy space in which to experience the “amorphous” nature of glass, welcoming the viewer into a molecular structure enlarged a billion times.
Mirages of light combined with a multitude of reflections will tantalize the eyes and immerse the viewer in the complex inner, microcosm of glass, not naturally perceptible by the ‘naked eye’. In this ‘game of light’, the glass will acquire colors and different shades through movement and interplays of light, and the viewer, reflected in the glassy surfaces, will admire the special effects appearing in the background.
Thanks to the most advanced technology used in the processing and finishing of the glass, it will be possible to perceive every detail of the material and enjoy the unique experience of a lightweight, glassy environment, free and richly expressive.
One of the protagonists of the installation is Dragontrail™, thin, chemically strengthened glass that is suitable for the production of smartphone and tablet covers. This latest revolutionary, cutting-edge technology represents the glass of the future. The high resistance of the surface (about 6 times higher than the resistance of a normal sodium-calcium glass of equal thickness), the lightness, the flexibility and the very high levels of scratch-resistance and impact-resistance properties differentiate this glass from the more common types of glass. Thanks to a special reinforcement treatment in the production process, this thin glass can be used for the first time in a wider variety of fields.
Next to the installation, there will be a special presentation using glass with educational and publicity materials that will allow visitors to discover the history and special features of glass, a fascinating, high-performance material which always looks to the future.
Our creative partner for this installation was Nosigner (CEO: Eisuke Tachikawa), a design company that was in charge of the strategy and execution of the project from graphic design to product and space planning.
With this installation, AGC, which specializes in glass solutions for buildings, automobiles and cover glass for electronic devices, opens up revolutionary perspectives for the creativity of architects, planners and designers, allowing them to create new structures, interiors and installations.
