Detroit Auto Show: auto glass innovations unveiled

The North American Auto Show, taking place right now in Detroit, has on show innovations and technology regarding auto glass that could be used for upcoming models of both concept and ‘on the road’ cars.

The ongoing 2013 North American Auto Show in Detroit is revealing new developments in auto glass, with vehicles showing innovation directed at both practical and fantasy applications for glass in cars.
Several of the concept cars showcased reveal technology that manufacturers may begin to use in upcoming models.
Nissan’s new concept car Resonance offering a floating glass roof was unveiled at the show. It features an “open, airy architecture highlighted by a unique ‘floating’ roof created through the use of the thin, steeply raked A-pillars, large full-length glass panel and flowing D-pillar design. Inside, the designers imagined what the future of first-class space travel might be: Welcoming yet exclusive and high-tech yet premium. The resulting ‘VIP lounge’, with its light, buttery leather and premium-stitched seats, exudes genuine sophistication,” according to Nissan.
Toyota’s all-glass concept Fun-Vii (vehicle, interactive, internet), with all-glass exterior, is also on display. The exterior of the vehicle features interactive glass and has been called a “smartphone on wheels” by the company.
“The ultimate in personalization, the Fun-Vii offers the ability to alter the content displayed on the interior and exterior with the same ease as downloading an application or posting to Instagram. The whole vehicle body can be used as a display space, with the body colour and display content changeable at will. This allows the entire vehicle to function as a display for messages or images as you choose,” says Toyota.
While many of the vehicles on display are concepts, the 2014 Jeep Compass is a vehicle that will soon be seen on the road. In its display, the vehicle showcases one of its new standard features, sunscreen glass.
Jeep issued a release saying, “The Jeep Compass offers an array of clever features consumers will appreciate whether commuting to work, driving in challenging weather conditions or exploring new trails or out-of-the-way places.”
The company also says the new model will feature an acoustic laminated glass windshield which “helps make this the quietest Compass ever.”
