Japan-based Asahi Glass will establish a new glass substrate factory in Shenzhen, southern China, to produce substrates for 8.5G TFT-LCD panel production lines with volume production slated for summer 2012, according to industry sources. Asahi“s first 8.5G glass substrate factory in Kunshan, eastern China will start volume production in the 2H 2011. Due to geographic proximity, China-based flat panel maker China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT), which is scheduled to complete construction of its 8.5G line in Shenzhen in the 2H of 2011, will likely benefit from Asahi“s move to build a new substrate plant in Shenzhen, according to industry sources in Taiwan. CSOT is jointly held by three companies, branded product vendor TCL (holding a 55% stake), Shenzhen Shenchao Technology Investment (30%), and Samsung Electronics (15%).
