LCD maker Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT) and Compal Electronics, a manufacturer of notebooks, announced in mid-February that they have established a China-based joint venture to process glass for touch panels. The new company – Hwallar Optoelectronics – will be located in CPT“s production base in Fuzhou, southeastern China. Compal will have a 19% stake in Hwallar with a USD 570,000 investment through its wholly-owned subsidiary HengHao Technology – a manufacturer of projected capacitive touch panels, while CPT will have 51%, and the remaining 30% will be held by the management team of the joint venture. The latest investment in the upstream sector, following the establishment of HengHao, is another step to secure supply of touch panels mainly for use in tablet PCs, Compal said.
