Specialist industrial glass and ceramic maker Multi-lab, based in Newcastle, north-east UK, is creating jobs as it reacts to increasing demand by relocating to larger premises. The family-run company, which employs around 60 people, has gained about 90% of the UK fabricated quartz glass market, and is moving into larger premises after adding eight jobs, with plans to create a further 12 in coming months. The move will enable the company, which has a facility in East Kilbride, Scotland, to develop and supply quartz glass housings for a new, high efficiency plasma lamp, which uses microwaves to generate light rather than a conventional electrode. Multi-lab has also developed a high purity quartz temperature sensor on which it has worldwide patents, and has secured new contracts to supply semi-conductor manufacturing sites in Europe, Japan, and the US. Ron Jackman Snr, managing director of Multi-lab, said: The market is very strong at the moment, particularly the solar and semi-conductor sector, and we“ve enjoyed a successful past 12 months. We“ve recruited eight new staff to meet our growing orders and the existing site is operating at capacity so we need to move on.
