After a drop in fibreglass yarn production capacity down to 36% in 2009, PPG has announced that demand now exceeds capacity, a good problem to have, says the Lexington plant manager Douthit. We have not only survived, we“ve thrived, Douthit said during the company“s annual legislative briefing. We“re leaner and meaner. We“ve learned a lot about what we can do here. A second furnace at the plant was started up in January 2010 and 110 people who had been laid off in the summer of 2009 were called back to work. Moreover, an additional 60 people have been hired this year. PPG has also approved the rebuild of one of the two furnaces running at the plant now has been approved, a further sign of the company“s confidence in making the USD 9.3 million investment, Douthit said, adding that state approval on air emissions control will be needed before that happens. The plant now employs 655 people: 439 of them PPG employees and 216 permanent, contract employees.
