Central Glass has announced that, in preparation for its entry into the photovoltaic cell market, it intends to launch commercial production of highly-transparent figured cover glass for crystalline silicon-type and compound-type solar cell modules. In line with this move, the company will also restart operations of its roll-out figured glass line (suspended since July 2009) at the Matsusaka Plant in Mie Prefecture scheduled for April 2011. Cover glass used in the Japanese market is currently imported, and Central Glass says that its domestic production will meet the demand of the market. Moreover, in order to improve the performance of power-generation solar cell modules, the company is also involved in the development of more efficient anti-reflection coatings for cover glass.
