The Far East is reportedly expecting a major shortage of the glass used in the production of monitors and touchscreens. The supply of glass substrates for 6-generation TFT-LCD panel production is reportedly running 3-5% short of demand and 7.5-generation glass supply is running 5-10% short. Display panel maker AU Optronics said, however, that the supply of 8.5G glass substrates is sufficient at present, thanks to the flat market situation of notebooks and monitors. Panel maker Chimei Innolux Corporation is reported as being optimistic about the panel market in 2011, and does not think any shortage of components will have significant impact. Most suppliers are seemingly facing their crisis now and are expected to have everything under control by the next quarter. It is not yet clear, however, what affect this is having on the LCD industry and which companies are having problems.
