Preciosa (Jablonec nad Nisou, Czech Republic), glass and jewellery company, will reportedly acquire two glassmaking plants in Desna and Zasada near Jablonec-nad-Nisou, from glass and jewellery Jablonex Group (JG) (Czech Republic) at the end of 2009. JG ended manufacturing in summer 2009 due to economical problems. This means that Preciosa, concentrating on cut glass, glass pearl and jewellery stone manufacturing, will become the largest Czech manufacturer of the sector. Moreover, Preciosa already has some small jewellery manufacturers working in the region of Jablonec-nad-Nisou. Demand for glass jewellery and unfinished products, mostly exported, decreased in 2008 according to the Czech Association of Glassware and Ceramics Industry, with proceeds of the sector decreasing 36% year on year to CEK 2.97 billion in the Czech Republic in 2008.
