Insulation manufacturer Owens Corning confirmed reports 24 March 2009 that it has put 100 employees on furlough because of the economic crisis. News of the lay-offs first emerged on the evening of 24 March 2009 in an announcement by state Assemblyman Tim Gordon, who represents the town of Bethlehem, New York. Company officials later confirmed the move in the following statement from Scott Deitz, vice president, investor relations and corporate communications. “There have been job furloughs at our plant. Approximately 100 employees have been notified of and affected by furloughs since the end of 2008. Sixty of those 100 employees were notified today”, Mr. Deitz said. “These actions have been taken as Owens Corning adjusts its business and spending to align with the economic and housing downturn in the US”. The Owens Corning plant makes thermal and acoustic insulation products used in construction throughout the north-east and Quebec, Canada. Company officials did not say how long the furloughs would last. But Mr. Gordon said the company hopes to re-hire the employees once the economy begins to improve.
