Polish listed chemical group Ciech bought German sodium manufacturer Sodawerk Holding Stassfurt in its entirety for EUR 75 million (USD 109.7 million) from unnamed private equity funds and individual investors, Ciech said on 22 November 2007. SWS produces bicarbonate of soda and light and heavy calcined soda. It has an annual soda production capacity of 450,000 tonnes. The transaction will be finalised with Ciech“s own funds and with the proceeds of a bond issue. Ciech produces soda ash, vacuum salt, phosphorous fertilisers, sodium silicate in lumps, ethylbenzene, dyestuffs and other chrome and phosphorus compounds. It is Europe“s third-largest soda producer after Belgium“s Solvay and the UK“s Brunner Mond.
