French glassmaker Saint-Gobain may be facing one of the largest fines ever imposed by the European Commission as the investigation for alleged cartel behaviour enters its final stage, French media cited daily Les Echos. The Commission launched an investigation over price fixing in various glass markets three years ago. The decision of the European institution is expected within weeks, possibly as early as 28 November 2007, Les Echos reported. The highest-ever fine imposed by the Commission was EUR 480 million (USD 701.8 million) on German steel and engineering company ThyssenKrupp earlier in 2007. The German company was fined for price-fixing in the elevator business.
