It was reported 8 November 2007 that glassmaker Compagnie de Saint-Gobain SA unsuccessfully approached French cement company Lafarge SA with a merger plan. French Saint-Gobain“s chairman Jean-Louis Beffa approached chief executive of Lafarge Bruno Lafont and the company“s major shareholder Belgian businessman Albert Frere, who both turned down the offer. French holding company Wendel said on 7 November that it had increased its stake in Saint-Gobain to 15.5% and started talks with Saint-Gobain“s management over company strategy.
