Consumption of soft drinks bottled in glass increased 19% to 667 million units in 2006, according to a statement by ANFEVI, the Spanish association of glass packaging manufacturers. ANFEVI said that this growth, amounting to an increase in sales of 100 million items compared to 2005, shows that 63% of Spaniards value glass more highly than other containers. The most popular type of soft drink is cola, with 53% of the market, despite a 1% decline in 2006 due to the growth of new flavors and energy drinks. The boom in these drinks has been such that the National Soft Drink Manufacturers Association has created a new classification for them, as production has surpassed established drinks such as ginger ale, horchata or soda. The most prominent new drinks which have moved outside the heterogenous group known as “other drinks” are beverages known for their natural or healthy properties. Output of so-called tropical beverages has reached 5 million liters while production of mixed-flavor drinks is at 3.4 million liters and output of fruit flavors has reached 3.3 million liters. ANFEVI member companies increased their sales in 2006 by 3.5% with production of 6,877 million bottles and jars, up 237 million on 2005.
