Consumption of olive oil packed in glass containers in Spain in 2005 registered an increase of 5.6 % year-on-year, resulting in an increase in sales of glass container by 9 million bottles, as per the Spanish Perfiles Institute survey released on 26 September 2006. Following the rising sales trend on the domestic market, 172.4 million bottles of olive oil were sold. Sales of olive oil increased by 27.6 % in 2004-2005 and, during the same period, glass bottles sales rose by 36 million. Glass bottles were preferred by Spaniards as it preserves the product best and does not change its flavour, according to the majority of consumers. Some 96% of Spanish families consume olive oil regularly. Catalonia and Aragon represent 22% each of the total olive oil sales in glass bottles in Spain, followed by Navarre, with 9.7%.
