New Zealand“s largest vehicle insurer has been fined NZD 127,000 after some customers were told they had to use the company“s preferred windscreen repair company, Smith and Smith Glass. IAG, the owner of State Insurance, was also ordered to pay NZD 3,900 in court costs and NZD 10,000 in costs to the Commerce Commission after it admitted 30 breaches of the Fair Trading Act. IAG admitted the charges before Judge Josephine Bouchier in Auckland District Court today. One further charge was withdrawn. The charges came after State Insurance customers were told they had to use Smith and Smith Glass for windscreen repairs although their brochures said they could have repairs carried out by any service nationwide.
