UK container glass machinery manufacturer Sheppee International, based at Elvington in northern England, is celebrating after winning a contract with a bottle maker in the Philippines. The GBP 270,000 contract, for a firm which makes bottles for San Miguel, is the latest in a number of export successes. The firm was rescued from bankruptcy administration 14 years ago by a team including current managing director Jeff Yoward. The company kept its name, well-known in the industry, and now employs 40 people and has a turnover of GBP 2.8 million. Mr Yoward said: “Our products are used to produce anything from perfume bottles to champagne glasses – any kind of glass container – 75% of our business is exported. We have had a very good year, our turnover grew by half a million pounds last year and the potential is there to do the same this year”. The firm is doing particularly well in the Far East, Russia and India but it is looking to break into other markets including South America. It participated at the Mir Stekla trade fair in 2005 and will also be present at Moscow in June 2006. The company was founded in 1908 by Colonel Frank Sheppee but it was not until the 1920s that it began to specialise in developing machines for the container glass industry.
