Malaysian immigration authorities arrested 284 illegal workers at the Malaysian subsidiary of Nippon Electric Glass Co., it was reported on 6 October 2004 Following a toughening of Malaysian immigration law in 2002, companies that hire illegal workers can be fined MYR 10,000 to MYR 50,000 for each such worker, while managers can face prison sentences from six months to five years as well as floggings of up to six strokes. Nippon Electric Glass, a major manufacturer of CRT glass is thus expected to be fined up to JPY 400 million, while its managers face the prospect of prison terms and floggings. The authorities raided the company following a tip-off from the public. The workers arrested were 227 Indonesians, 24 Bangladeshis, 20 Nepalese and 13 Indians. Of those arrested, 136 possessed forged identification documents, 98 were illegal immigrants and 50 were using work permits unlawfully.
