Expanded production capacity and business scope in Taiwan is the project that Asahi Glass Fine Techno Taiwan Co. Ltd. (AFT), a 100%-own local subsidiary of the Asahi Glass Co. (AGC) of Japan, announced recently. According to AFT, the expansion project is scheduled for completion in June 2003, raising the company“s monthly capacity to over 200,000 square meters of glass for thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels. AFT also said that it would build a furnace in Taiwan to produce glass panels in widths of up to three meters, fulfilling the requirements of future-generation TFT-LCD panels. AFT began building production facilities in Taiwan three years ago and plans to set up at least six glass production lines and several furnaces in Taiwan in several phases. AFT said that after June 2003 it would have three production lines. The other three lines are scheduled to be completely installed by 2005, by which time the company will be able to output over three million square meter of glass per annum. AFT said that it would also invest in a TFT-LCD film plant, with a projected monthly capacity of 80,000 to 10,000 films in the first stage. Several high-ranking AFT officials jointly called upon the county government in Yunlin, where AFT“s plant is located, to express their willingness to invest there in the future.
