The Belgian glassmaker Glaverbel plans to construct a glass tempering line in Roccasecca, Italy with an investment of ItL 21 billion. This decision was taken on the advice of American consulants McKinsey who recommend expansion in the automobile sector. The Roccasecca plant currently produces 4 million cylindrical and spherical glasses a year with 70% of production going to the Italian carmaker Fiat. The remaining 30% goes to plants run by BMW, Renault, Peugeot and Honda. The new plant should produce an additional 2.5 million pieces a year. According to the business plan, the investment should increase turnover by 40% in four years to ItL 130 billion. Glaverbel is based in Belgium and is 55% controlled by the Japanese glass giant Asahi Glass. In addition to Roccasecca in Italy, Glaverbel also has plants in Cuneo and Salerno. The Italian operations generated net profits of ItL 9.1 billion in 2000 while they lost ItL 2.9 billion in 1999.
