Japanese optical glassmaker Hoya Corp reported an increase in group net profit for the year ended 31 March 2001 to JPY 21.86 billion (US$ 180 million) compared with JPY 20.72 billion in 2000. Group sales in fiscal 2001 were JPY 236.8 billion versus JPY 201.11 billion in the previous year. Earnings per share in fiscal 2001 were JPY 188.25 versus JPY 178.39 the year before. The favorable performance is attributed to robust sales of optical glass products used in digital cameras and maskblanks for manufacturing microchips. The Tokyo-based company marked record high earnings for the third straight year, despite a one-time JPY14.3 billion charge-off to amortize the goodwill of a US optical lense-making subsidiary it has purchased.
