Hoya Corporation of Japan, the leading maker of optical glass and eyeglasses, has reported a 30% year-on-year gain in group operating profit to JPY 12.1 billion for the October-December quarter and a 33% rise in net profit to JPY 7.8 billion. The company attributed the rise to the strong showing of its electro-optics division, which produces mask blanks, a material for making microchips, and optical lenses used in digital cameras. Total sales grew 19% to JPY 60.5 billion. Sales at the electro-optics division jumped 27% to JPY 29.8 billion, boosting its operating profit by 49% to JPY 9.7 billion. The vision-care division, which produces eyeglasses, posted a 15% rise in sales to JPY 21.1 billion.
