For the quarter ending 30 September 2000, US chemicals operation General Chemical Group reported net earnings of US$ 3.3 million on sales totalling US$ 61.1 million. Over the same period in 1999, net income was US$ 1.1 million on sales of US$ 64.1 million. Figures for 2000 include a US$ 7.7 million pre-tax gain related to the sale of a quarry at the company“s Amherstburg, Canada, facility. According to the company, earnings for the quarter were negatively effected by higher energy costs and lower soda ash prices. For the first nine months of 2000, General Chemical reported net income of US$ 2.2 million on sales of US$ 181 million. For the first nine months of 1999, net income was US$ 4.4 million on sales of US$ 194.8 million.
