Plans by Amcor Ltd. for a new bottle production facility in South Australia, scheduled to come on stream in 2002, have spurred investment by rival Australian glass container manufacturer ACI Packaging, which is owned by US group Owens Illinois. ACI is valued at over A$1 billion and currently dominates the Australian market. According to ACI Packaging CEO Peter Robinson, recent investments of more than A$ 150 million have been made in new glass container manufacturing technology in order to face the increasing competition from Amcor.
