Solvay Soda Ash Joint Venture (SSAJV of Wyoming), a natural soda ash production joint venture in the US between Solvay (Belgium) and the Asahi Glass group, has increased production capacity by about 20% to around 2,430,000 tons by investing several billion yen. As a result, the quota allocated to the Asahi Glass group will be increased by 70,000 tons to about 500,000 tons. According to the company, the Asahi Glass group will direct nearly 100% of the incremented volume to Japan, as it is scheduled to stop synthetic soda ash production at its Kitakyushu factory by the end of next March. SSAJV does not have a next augmentation plan at moment. Though demand is expected to expand with the Asian market playing a central role, the future supply-demand balance, in the company“s opinion, needs to be analyzed taking into account the emergence of Chinese products.
