Singapore“s Fraser & Neave Ltd. said net profit for the half year ended March 31 rose sevenfold to S$ 71.5 million (US$ 41.6 million) from S$ 9 million a year earlier. The Singapore food and beverage group said the main reason for the improvement in its soft-drink division was the sale of its stake in joint venture F&N Coca-Cola Pte. Ltd. in July 1999, thus avoiding a pretax loss of S$ 36.2 million. Another reason was the turnaround in its Malaysian soft-drink operations, which reported an interim net profit of S$ 7.6 million swinging from a loss of S$ 12.3 million a year earlier.
