Asahi Glass, Mitsubishi Corp. and Net One Systems Co. plan to jointly sell a high-speed optical fibre developed by Asahi Glass. The fibre, known as Lucina, is made of a transparent fluoropolymer, and it can transmit data at 10Gbps over a distance of up to 100 metres, faster than optical fibre made of quartz. It is resistant to bending and can be connected to other optical fibres in one-tenth of the usual time because of its large core diameter. It can also cut installation costs, including systems building, by about 30%. The firms are targeting the fibre for use in high-speed local area networks for companies, and they are aiming for 50 billion yen (US$ 465.1 million) in sales from the entire system after five to six years. Mitsubishi plans to use the fibre in its headquarters building in Tokyo, which is slated for completion in 2003.
