With broadly stable glass consumption, the amount of waste glass collected in Switzerland in 1999 increased by about 2,000 tonnes on the previous year, reaching 283,000 tonnes. A return rate of 92.6% was thus achieved in 1999, a new record figure. Per head of population, 39.6 kg of waste glass were collected in 1999, making Switzerland top of the international league table. Of the 283,000 tonnes of waste glass recycled, 79,500 tonnes were used by the Swiss glass industry to make new glass, while 121,000 tonnes were exported and 82,500 were used for alternative purposes (gravel substitute in civil engineering and processing into building materials).
