Modernization of packaging technology is one of the Chinese government“s priorities in the coming years, according to a market survey conducted by the organizers of China Packtech & Foodtech 2000. According to the survey, there are 15,000 (predominantly small) packaging companies with around 2 million employees in China, of which 41% are state-owned, 49% partially privatized, 3% completely in private hands and 7% joint ventures with foreign firms. With the exception of the latter, accounting for 14% of the sector“s total turnover, the sector“s productivity is low and the quality of the goods produced is well below European standards, because of old production facilities. The survey also revealed that the packaging manufactured in China is mainly paper and board (approx. 50%) and glass (approx. 26%), although recently, plastic (14%) and metal (10%) have also increasingly been used. The shortage of raw materials is also a major problem, according to the survey.
