Korea and Japan, two of the world“s biggest suppliers of semiconductors, recently agreed to join forces in developing a new chip for LCDs. Samsung Electronics Co., Toshiba and Off Tracks, a subsidiary of Asahi Glass Co., said they will jointly develop a semiconductor for LCDs, in a move to meet increasing demand for wireless handsets. Samsung and Toshiba will supply the integrated circuits (IC) for the handsets while Off Tracks will produce and distribute the completed products. The three companies hope to gain an upper hand in the world chip market through the new development of the chip.
