US-based Raytheon Co. said it has been selected by Corning Inc. to provide engineering, procurement, and construction management services to expand and enhance two Corning optical fibre manufacturing plants in North Carolina. Corning plans to invest a total of about US$ 600 million in its two North Carolina plants, located in Concord and Wilmington. Raytheon will perform a significant portion of the work planned for the two sites. The value of the award to Raytheon was not disclosed. Work has already begun at both sites. Raytheon will manage the projects from its offices in Birmingham, Alabama. The projects are expected to employ 1,800 people at their peak. In 1999, Raytheon completed engineering, procurement, and construction management of Corning“s newest fibre-making facility in Concord. Raytheon has now been selected for the first major plant expansion at this facility.
