Two leading UK companies, based in the city of Stoke-on-Trent, are celebrating after winning an industry “Oscar” at this year“s packaging awards. Josiah Wedgwood & Sons approached Danisco Pack, Stoke, based in Old Whieldon Road, to help it design new containers for a range of valuable vases. Its innovative and environmentally-friendly solution has now won a coveted gold award at the 1999 Starpack Awards, the trade showcase organized by the Institute of Packaging and Packaging News. “It is marvellous that two local companies have been able to combine in this way to produce an innovative design and help the environment,” said Wedgwood packaging procurement manager David Walton. The new pack is capable of holding any one of three different vases, and is cheaper to fit than the bubble wrap and chips it replaces. It has also reduced the damage rate from 5% to less than 1% of returns.
