Sources with the 1999 Composite Material Exhibition, which was convened on 15 September, said the US Owens Corning has been setting its eyes on the development of the Chinese composite material and glass fiber industry for many years. In 1995, the company set up the first joint venture in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province to produce glass fibre insulation material. Then it established a glass fiber insulation material factory and an extrusion foam insulation material factin Shanghai and Nanjing. The extrusion foam insulation material factory is China“s first of its kind. The company set up a wholly-owned venture in Anshan of Liaoning Province this July to specialize in production of glass fiber insulation products. To assist and promote the development of the Chinese industries, Owens Corning formed the Shanghai Technology Center in 1997, aimed at introducing new technology, conducting R&D of new products, exploring new applications of products, and opening new markets. According to Steven R. Zirkel, general manager of the Asia-Pacific region of Owens Corning, North America and Europe have grabbed the largest market share, while the Asia-Pacific region and Latin America will be potential markets of composite material consumption.
