17 June 1999: Japanese shipments of sheet glass edged up 0.1% on the year in March to 2.35 million boxes, the first increase in twenty-one months, according to the Flat Glass Manufacturers Association of Japan. Output climbed for a fourth straight month, rising 10% to 2.32 million boxes, each one containing the equivalent of about 47 kg of sheet glass. Shipments of safety glass, mainly for automotive use, improved for the first time in four months, growing 5.5%. Pair glass shipments surged 24.8%, registering a fifth consecutive month of year-on-year gains.
