7 October 1998: Nippon Electric Glass of Japan is tapping a Saga Prefecture factory to launch mass production of a new type of ferrule, small parts for optical connectors, according to a recent report. The product uses crystallized glass instead of the more common ceramics to yield a connector just 1.249 mm in diameter. Ferrules are designed cylindrically to let an optical fibre slip through. The company“s investment of about 1 billion yen will bring its output of 300,000 units per month late this fiscal year, up to a million units or more in 2000, by which time Nippon Electric Glass said it hopes to have a price of 100 yen or less.
