29 December 1997: The Swiss glass packaging manufacturer Vetropack has announced that it is to cut 56 jobs at its plants in Buelach and St-Prex. Compulsory redundancies will affect 25 staff. Vetropack currently employs 283 people at Buelach and 190 at St-Prex. With prices for glass packaging in Switzerland coming under pressure as mineral water producers switch increasingly to PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles, Vetropack reported a SFr 9.8 million loss in the first half of 1997.
