The company specialises in providing refractories for the construction of glass furnaces.
Stara Glass was established in Pisa in the early fifties under the name of S.T.A.R.A. (Tuscan Company for Clays, Refractory scraps and Similar) and specialized in activities of demolition, removal and treatment of refractory waste resulting, in general, from industrial furnaces.
One of Stara Glass’ main activities is glass furnace thermal design, for which Stara’s research and development team has developed various models to compute the furnace and its heat recovery system.
Stara Glass is part of the “Prime Glass project”, together with Stazione Sperimentale del Vetro and Università degli Studi di Genova. This project aims to trial and demonstrate technologies that will significantly improve environmental impact of the glass industry, reducing NOx, CO2, CO sulfur oxides and dust emissions and energy consumption. Moreover, it will demonstrate advantage of infrared thermography applied to the glass furnace, offering a quantitative monitoring of the temperature field in the melted glass and in the flame structure. This project is co-financed by the LIFE financial instrument of the European Union.
