The director general of Homyel-based glass company AAT Homyelshklo, Yury Ilyew, is being kept in pre-trial detention on suspicion of bribery. According to the press office of the Committee for State Security (KGB), Ilyew was arrested on 27 May 2009. Criminal proceedings were instituted against him under Part Three of the Criminal Code Article 430. According to the KGB, Ilyew had repeatedly accepted money from commercial firms in exchange for favourable decisions regarding sales of products, and is believed to have taken bribes totalling about USD 350,000 between 2004 and 2007. Homyelshklo is Belarus“ only flat glassmaker and is one of the largest glass manufacturers in Europe with an annual output capacity of more than 18 million square meters.
