The contract to build packaging group Amcor“s new multi-million-dollar wine bottle plant in South Australia has gone to Leighton Holdings“ contractors subsidiary. Amcor announced in March 2003 that it wanted to double production at its existing plant in Gawler, north of Adelaide, by building a second glass furnace with a production capacity of 200 million bottles a year from mid-2005. Leighton Contractors will be paid AUD 115 million to build the new facility, which will extend Amcor“s existing glass furnace and manufacturing plant. The new contract comes after Leighton won the initial contract to build the original Amcor plant at Gawler, which began production in 2002.
