Taiwan-based LCD TV maker Amtran Technology has enetered the LED lighting market in North America thanks to a partnership with Vizio, according to company chairman Alpha Wu. Amtran has launched LED bulbs designed to replace conventional incandescent light bulbs of 40W and 60W, and will, said Wu, offer models to replace 75-100W incandescent bulbs after the LED lighting market takes off. Because prices for LED lighting products are about 5-10 times those for conventional equivalents, this will not happen until the price gap is reduced, expected in about two years. The LED chips for Amtran“s lighting products are produced by Taiwan-based Epistar and packaged by Lustrous Technology, with bulbs assembled by Neng Tyi Precision Industries.
