Asahi Glass will begin promotional activities to expand demand for polyurethane (PU) system solution in the Southeast Asian market. According to a recent report, the company will utilize its plant in Shanghai, China, where some excess capacity is available. More specifically, it will explore potential consumer electronics and housing material-related demand in Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines by operating through its Singaporean local subsidiary dedicated to chemicals trading established in April this year, the report said. Asahi Glass has Shanghai Zijiang Asahi Urethane, a joint venture formed with Itochu Corp. and a local enterprise in Shanghai. The joint venture was originally intended to supply PU system solution for PU products for refrigerators showcases using a 6,000-tons per year plant. Its operation rate, however, has remained low due to delays in technology transfer. The company, in the meantime, is increasing exports to Singapore from the joint venture in Shanghai instead of from Japan. The report said the joint venture will assume responsibility for supplying the Southeast Asian market for the time being, excluding some speciality products.
