Asahi Glass Co. said it will invest about JPY 1.5 billion to build a new plant for components in optical equipment such as digital versatile disc players. Construction work will start in February, with production set to start in October, Japan“s top glass maker said. The new plant will be located on the premises of Asahi Glass Koriyama Electric Material Co., a wholly owned subsidiary in eastern Japan, Asahi Glass said. Initial production will consist of optical devices for optical pickups The company plans to turn the new plant into a production and development hub of its optical business and start producing parts for optical communications devices in the fiscal year beginning in April 2002.
