Atlantic Windows is continuing with its expansion at its Port Elgin premises and expects things to be completed by the end of the year. According to company president Rob Miller, the expanded facilities could translate into an increase in the number of employees at the Port Elgin location.
Leading supplier of vinyl windows and doors, Atlantic Windows, is investing USD 2 million in an expansion to its facilities in Port Elgin. Construction on the second of two large buildings to be used for both manufacturing and storage is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
Established in 1983 in Port Elgin, Atlantic Windows has maintained its corporate headquarters and manufacturing plant in the village. In 2007 it also opened a production facility in nearby Amherst, N.S. which fabricates most of its line of doors.
At peak operating times the company employs about 200 in its Port Elgin facility, with another 50 in Amherst.
Company president Rob Miller said that continued growth within the organization has resulted in the facility requiring more space.
“We have some new product development that’s going to be introduced in 2015 that will require some additional floor space and equipment…over half (of the new building area) is production area. The other half is for finished goods and material storage,” he said.
The second portion of the current expansion project is the construction of a large building adjacent to the former Regional Memorial School.
Miller added the expanded facilities could translate into an increase in the number of employees at the Port Elgin location.
Atlantic Windows markets its products, which include energy efficient doors and windows, across Atlantic Canada; however it also ships a significant amount to Bermuda, as well as to the Bahamas.
“Our primary focus is to support initiatives within the communities where we live and work. We support many local initiatives, Pedvac (Port Elgin voluntary action council) is one of the primary ones that we continue to support each and every year. And of course our secondary focus continues to be the IWK. Working together with our employees, we recently delivered a cheque in excess of USD 35,000 to the IWK in Halifax. This (medical facility) of course supports all communities, both big and small, throughout the Maritimes, so we’re very pleased to do that,” he said.
