Bosch to close silicon thin-film works

The Bosch silicon thin-film module plant in Erfurt, Germany will close, due to current PV price pressures and global overcapacity. The closure will affect about 130 employees.

Bosch Solar Energy AG has announced that its 30-megawatt (MW) silicon thin-film module plant in Erfurt, Germany will close, with 130 employees affected by the decision.
The company will try to either relocate the employees internally or help them find new employers in the region in order to avoid redundancies.
Bosch said that from now on it will concentrate on crystalline photovoltaics (PV) in Arnstadt and CIGS development in Brandenburg, as these business areas offer the greatest potential for the group.
The reasons behind the closure of the Erfurt plant are current PV price pressures and global overcapacity, as well as, according to the company, PV tariff cuts recently applied to large solar parks in Germany.
