The turnover of the Brazilian glass manufacturing industry increased 11.4% in 2004 to BRL 3.706 billion according to Abividro (Associacao Tecnica Brasileira das Industrias Automaticas de Vidro), the body that represents automated glass manufacturing companies. Of the total, glass packaging sales represented BRL 1.109 billion (29.9%), technical glass accounted for BRL 1.119 billion (30.3%), flat glass amounted to BRL 998 billion (26.9%), and household glassware to BRL 480 million (12.9%). Technical glass showed the largest increase with 24.9%. The installed capacity of the area grew 12%. Household glass showed an expansion of 11.6%; packaging grew by 7.3%; automobile glass increased 3.1%. Export sales rose 9.5%, to USD 286 million in 2004. The main markets are the US and South American countries. In 2004, Brazil expanded its flat glass production capacity by 25% to 1.2 million tonnes. Exports of flat glass reached USD 114.8 million in 2004; exports of technical glass amounted to USD 107.5 million and those for household glass were USD 53.1 million. In the packaging segment, exports fell from USD 30 million to USD 12 million.
