The Brazilian division of Sekurit (car glazing), part of French glass to building materials conglomerate Saint Gobain, has negotiated its first export deal of windscreens to China through its Chinese subsidiary. Recent certification by CSGC (China Safety Glass Certification Center) has allowed the company to operate in China. Sekurit already ships 60,000 glass items to China through Volkswagen do Brasil for the Golf and Polo models. Under the new contract, this will rise to 80,000 windshields until 2004. Meanwhile, the Sekurit plant at Maua (Sao Paulo state), is only operating at 2/3 capacity as 250 of the 850 employees are on vacation.
